4 Tips for Home Office Design

Almost a quarter of working people in the US work full-time from home. And the estimate is that over 50% work at least part of the time from home. That clearly explains why interior designers like me are being asked to design home offices that can support that labor. I’ve created a lot of rooms to spark productivity, so here are my 4 best tips for home offices that really work!

1. Create Focus

The key to productivity is the ability to stay focused on the task at hand. So the colors you select for your home office are key. Recent studies have shown that dark colors that envelop a room really do help you center your attention and concentrate. In the space I designed above, I used a deep navy on the walls and woodwork, adding pops of yellow and orange to provide a wow factor.

2. Limit Clutter

Storage is so important in a home office. Clutter and chaos are distractions, so you want to be able to hide away anything that can keep you from getting work done. I like to be sure there’s storage for printers, papers, routers, and even cords. Creating that visual harmony is important for staying on task. In my Morningview project above, I designed custom cabinets that hide all of the workday essentials.

3. Inspire Creativity

Whether your home office is a dedicated room or just a part of a guest room, be sure to include art, flowers, photography and anything else that will lighten the mood and inspire you. You’ll see art and fresh flowers in every home office that I’ve designed, including the one above in my London project.

4. A New Perspective

If you do have the space, always include a secondary chair, preferably a lounge chair. It’s good to have another seat and another perspective, especially if you’re working on something challenging or tricky. It moves you around the space and gives you a new way of looking at things!
