Why Texture Is Key

It’s interesting that when we discuss a room’s design, we tend to talk about color or the style of the furnishings more than anything else. But there are details in a room that can completely change everything about how it looks, and how it feels. And that’s texture!

A room needs a balance of rough and smooth, dimensional and flat - especially if the room is designed with neutrals or all white. I love dimensional tile that feels good to the touch, for example. It adds a lot of look to a space.

In the room above, I brought in a textured mirror, vases with a great 2D pattern, and lots of woven texture in the rug and drapery. But what really seals the deal is that fretwork on the drawer fronts. It makes a “plain” blue-and-white setting really sing!

Carpets and rugs offer a terrific way to introduce texture to a room, especially with varied heights in the pile. I loved the rug above that I used in a coastal room. It added so much to the otherwise neutral room!

In a bathroom, like the one I designed above, there are so many smooth and hard surfaces. So I like to bring in texture through things like a grasscloth wallcovering. It makes a big difference in changing the room from cold and clinical to completely wow-worthy!
