The Dining Room Is Back

It’s so interesting how trends in home design can change. Our lifestyles evolve, the way we use our homes morphs, and suddenly certain trends are in or out. Just a year or two ago, everyone in the home world was predicting the end of the formal dining room. Home builders were proclaiming that this room was going to disappear in just a short time. Designers were creating libraries in the dining room, or other spaces that they felt would get more use. What a difference a pandemic can make, right?! Now we’re seeing a resurgence in dining rooms, and there are three important reasons for that. Let’s take a look!

Family Time

The pandemic forced us to have almost every single meal together as a family again - and we discovered that we actually liked that time together! We also really missed the family that we couldn’t see during that isolation, so gathering for meals became a real treat. And of course you want a great place to sit together while you enjoy the meal. So welcome back, dining room!

Multifunctional Spaces

The pandemic also caused us to rethink how we use every single spot in our house. With everyone working from home (still today!), there are much-needed zoom and desk areas. The dining room is the perfect spot for that because it not only works hard, it looks good, too. It makes a lovely backdrop for those video calls.

Feeling Nostalgic

Isn’t it interesting that everything old is new again? Darker wood finishes are back, midcentury is still hot hot hot, and we’re all yearning for our childhoods. That’s normal when we’re in times of uncertainty. So a dining room is definitely reminding us of when things seemed so much simpler. We want that room that made so many great memories for us to come back into our lives. It’s also a fabulous place to entertain now that we can all get back together again!

So how do you feel about your dining room? Let me know in the comments section below!

Warmly,
