The Art of Neutrality

Too often, people think of neutral spaces as boring or not worth notice. The flash still seems to get all the attention - and I love pattern and color, too. But those neutral spaces are so beautiful to me. So how do you keep a calm space from becoming too quiet? I have four great tips!

1. Mix Your Materials

Stone, wood, tile, and paint will all add subtle color and texture. When you mix materials in a space, it gives the feeling of depth and layers, which definitely avoids a ‘boring’ look!

2. Add a Splash of Color

Professional designers are expert at adding that one pop of color that draws all eyes, like in the breakfast nook I designed above. The space is serene and stunning, and that deep blue only makes it more lovely and grounded.

3. A Moment of Surprise

In the kitchen I designed above, I used pillowed cabinet fronts to provide a dimensional look. With a custom Benjamin Moore paint color, the cabinetry stands out instead of shrinking into the background.

4. Use Your Accessories

You can add even more depth and layers by using your accessories wisely. In the neutral room above, I used pillows, art, and objets to provide color and interest. They are also easily switched out as the season, or your mood, strikes you.
