Seeing Red

Red is a bold color that brings lots of drama. Maybe that’s why it’s seen as the color of hearts and Valentine’s Day - it makes people feel passionate. Studies show that red can actually raise your blood pressure, so this wouldn’t be a great color to use in a bedroom. If you’re nervous about using this punchy color in your home, here are a few ideas from details to diva-riffic!

1. Bold and Beautiful

If you want to surround yourself with red, consider a pattern that has lots of the ruby-like color, but with enough contrasting colors to keep you from feeling overwhelmed. In the gorgeous wallpaper above, and intricate lacy white pattern with just a touch of blue makes this a design with a lot of interest.

2. Watch Your Tone

If fiery reds are too hot for you, consider toned-down looks, like the muted jacquard I used in a dining room above. The rug is actually a bright, bright red, but the pattern turns down the heat. This is still bold, but toning down the reds makes it more palatable to some.

3. Make a Statement

Use red on one statement piece in the room, like the custom settee I created for a client above. Using it in a monochrome space really makes it pop, and it definitely shows a lot of personality!

4. An Artistic Touch

If you just want a touch of bold red in your home, consider a piece of original art. It allows you to make a bold move without overcommitting to this dramatic color!

5. Just a Kiss

And for those who just want a little red every now and then, use just a kiss of the color with flowers! Given that you’re also bringing a bit of nature indoors, this is a win-win for your decor.
