My Favorite Things: Architectural Details

There are homes and then there are wow-worthy showplaces. In my experience as a designer, it’s those incredible architectural details that take your home from good to incredible! I’m lucky enough to work with amazing architects, contractors, and specialists who help make my projects look incredible with thoughtful and skillful additions to a structure or a specific room. Here are a few of my favorites!

Molding

Decorative molding, like that along the top of the walls in my University Project, adds incredible detail to a room. Most molding that you see in basic construction is ho-hum, but molding like this is something special. It’s even better if it fits the historical period of your home. Architects and builders who add these details really move the bar on stellar construction! Look for special moldings along the top and bottom of walls, around doors and corners, and in chair rails and other places.

Wall Details

Molding doesn’t have to just run in a straight line along the edge of a wall, ceiling, or floor! One of my favorite builders to work with, William David Homes, is an expert at this. It creates depth and visual interest on any wall, and gives it a much richer and more luxurious look!

Millwork

You can find lovely moldings and building materials that are pre-made, of course, but I like working with talented craftspeople in my area, too! Millwork is a true art, and can give you a custom look that you can’t find in any other home in your area. I like to have custom millwork done for cabinetry, too. Wait until you see the reeded door fronts I’ve designed for my own master bath!

Arches

Arched doorways and entries are gorgeous and really catch the eye! I love it when an arch defines a beautiful view, almost like a frame around art. But it’s also spectacular to find an arch where you wouldn’t usually see one, like in this stunning bathroom! Look at how it draws the eye to that double shower and the beautiful marble.

Vaults

I’m going to cover ceilings that I love in another blog post, but I do have to say that I’m obsessed with any type of vault. Beams, arches, barrel vaults - they are all gorgeous and draw the eye up in a room, entry, or hallway like the one above.

Fireplace Details

There are fireplaces and then there are showpieces like the one above! Columns, corbels, tiles, flourishes, and patterns add an amazing look to boring fireboxes. Instead of just having a square black box in the middle of your wall, you can create something special that better fits the room’s decor.

I hope you enjoyed this tour of my favorite architectural details! This month I’m giving you all of my favorite home decor ideas, styles, colors, and more! Stay tuned later this week when I show you my go-to cabinet styles that I use over and over (because they fit almost any style)!

Warmly,

Beth
