How to Use Art to Make a Statement in Your Home

I love to curate art for my clients, whether that’s placing their own fabulous collection or helping them find the perfect pieces for their home. Art should make a statement in each room and it should help show what you love. The best art creates a personality for the home, and that can include paintings, photography, sculpture and more. Here are a few rules I live by to really make a statement with art.

1. Choose What You Love

No matter what, the art in your home should always be pieces that you love! You are the one who will live with the art and see it every single day, so don’t you want that to bring you joy?? Of course you do! And if you love it, a good interior designer can always find a way to use that art in a smart way. In the project I designed above, the incredible art was the jumping-off point for the entire house, including the palette.

2. Color Is Key

Sometimes my client has a piece of art that inspires the palette, and sometimes we want to select art that will complement a color scheme we’ve already selected. A good interior designer can ALWAYS find art that will be perfectly curated for your home - like the series above that ties in all the gorgeous color in this laundry room. And yes, you should have art in EVERY room in your house!

3. Scale It

Scale is very important when selecting art. You don’t want to have a tiny painting in a huge room - that will never make the statement that you want it to. In the project above, I selected very large paintings to perfectly frame the fireplace. They are as grand as the room is, and help to really anchor the gorgeous interior.

4. Perfect Placement

The biggest mistake most people make when hanging art in their home is placing it too high. All art should be about at eye level for people of average height. And you also should think about what is around the art. Will there be a lamp in the way? Should it be centered over the furniture or between doorways? All of that is key to making the art stand out in a balanced space. In the home above, we hung a fabulous artwork in the hall, but framed it perfectly in the doorway of the primary bedroom. It really makes a WOW statement!

5. Gorgeous Groups

Creating a beautiful gallery wall is an art in itself. You want pieces to be grouped together that are harmonious. Then you need to treat the group almost as a single piece of art. You want to select the center point and then work from there to place each piece. Creating a template with paper can help you perfect the art of the gallery wall!

Use these ideas to make a real statement in your home with art!

Warmly,

Beth
