How to Choose the Right Rug

When I’m designing a room, I’m thinking both about the overall look and the individual pieces. They should work well together to create a harmonious space, and sometimes people have the most trouble with rugs. I love finding the perfect rug for every space, but I also have all of the sources and contacts to make that happen. So here are my top 4 ways to be absolutely sure you make the right rug choice for your room!

1. Size DOES Matter

The thing I find too often is that people don’t select rugs that are large enough for their rooms. You want to have the furniture on the rug as much as possible. In the living room, as you can see above, the front of the chairs or sofa should be fully on the rug. In a dining room, the table and all of the chairs should fit on the rug. You don’t want to have an awkward time pulling your chair out and having it drop off the rug, or catch the rug as you pull the chair back up. In the bedroom, you should have a large enough rug that it will allow a person on either side of the bed to step out onto the rug. Always go as large as you can for a rug.

2. Consider Color

In a way, a rug is like a giant piece of art on the floor. So it can either complement the rest of the room, or it can dominate the look of the space. And either one is right. What you don’t want to do is select a gorgeous rug that is a dominant look and have it “fight” for attention with the rest of the room’s decor. In the playroom above, I selected a very bright and painterly rug that looks fantastic with the wallpaper and the sofa. It takes center stage in a lovely room.

3. Material Mix

Understanding your lifestyle and how you use each room will help you select the right rug. In a heavily trafficked area, or if you have little ones or dogs, consider performance fabrics for your rugs. That way you’ll enjoy the look for much longer. Wool rugs are also a fantastic choice. They are durable and they keep their shape a lot longer. I also like to use sisal in certain rooms, too, They have a great texture and they are also known for their durability.

4. Texture Talk

That idea of texture is also important. If you want something soft and fabulous underfoot when you wake up, a cut pile might be nice, but sisal would definitely not be the right choice. But in a hallway, a sisal might be perfect because if offers that texture that avoids slips. So think carefully about the type of texture you’re looking for in a rug.
