Why Custom Design Sets Your Rooms Apart

When clients work with an interior designer, they expect to see designs that fit their personalities and to have rooms that function perfectly for the way they live. And one of the best ways to set your home apart is through custom design. When you have furnishings and fixtures developed specifically for your home, you know you’re getting quality, a personal touch, and beautiful looks that no one else will have. Your rooms are more unique and gorgeous when they include custom elements! Here are some of my favorite ways to customize my clients’ homes.

1. Customized Function

Often my clients will have really specific requests, like hiding the television. Part of my expertise as a designer is to come up with clever and out-of-the-box ideas to make sure those requests are met. For example, I designed a custom cabinet in the photo above to hide the television. With the push of a button, the TV rises out of the top of the cabinet. And it can be hidden away when TV-time is over. These great ideas can only happen with custom design!

2. Custom Furniture

I often recommend custom furniture to my clients, for two specific reasons. First, it will definitely make your room stand apart from others when you have a beautiful piece that was designed just for you. Second, if we can’t find that perfect look, we can create it. For the breakfast area in a Houston home I designed above, we needed a very specific size for the table, so we created it! It’s a beautiful design that really makes the space shine.

3. Custom Cabinetry

Custom cabinetry is one of my go-to suggestions in almost every home I design. Usually you get a much better quality cabinet than the ones you can buy premade. And you get the storage and design that you need. In the bar area of a home I designed above, we wanted very specific drawers and units, like the wine rack and the wine fridge. Going custom ensured that this bar functions the way it should for my clients, and it looks stunning, too!

4. Custom Walls

There are a lot of beautiful wall coverings out there, but when one pattern becomes really popular, you see it everywhere. I work with some amazing artisans to craft walls that are completely unique, like the gold-leafed pattern in the powder room above. I also love to use plaster techniques that create texture and a soft glow in rooms.

5. Art & Accessories

Everything you see in the photo above is custom. The art is an original painting; the runner has been created with a custom color, and the metal railing is a custom design. There are so many ways to bring a one-of-a-kind look into your house, so think out of the box!
