The 6 Best Kitchen Organization Ideas

One of the most important design elements for any kitchen is organization. A well-organized kitchen is going to function better for you, and make you enjoy your time using the space. As interior designers, we have insight into which organizing ideas really pay off for our clients. Yes, some are better than others! So here are my top 6 pro tips for getting your kitchen as organized as it can be!

1. Take Your Cabinets All the Way to the Ceiling

To stay organized, you need to take advantage of every single square inch in your kitchen. I always advise my clients to take their upper cabinets all the way to the ceiling. It gives you extra space for items that you don’t use very often, like holiday ware, big pots, and large pitchers. And it avoids that dusty ledge that no one ever knows what to do with!

2. Add a Garage

No, not for your cars! Consider adding an appliance garage, like the one you see in my Windrush project above. That type of garage allows you to park your small appliances, like coffee makers, blenders, mixers, and more. You can even add pull-out surfaces and electrical outlets so the appliances can be used right where they are. It keeps your counters clean and clear, too!

3. Swap Doors for Drawers

Install drawers rather than the usual cabinet doors to maximize space. A pull-out drawer makes it SO much easier to reach things in the back of the space. If you’ve ever had to try to reach something in the very back of a bottom cabinet, you know how frustrating that can be. So use drawers to make everything more organized and easier.

4. Watch the Corners

Those corners in your kitchen cabinets are also awkward spaces. So ask your designer or contractor to help you find the best solution. In the kitchen above, a folding door in the corner opens to reveal lazy Susan style shelves that spin to let you reach every single thing stored there. You can also find pull-out shelves, lift-up platforms and more that fit those corner spaces.

5. Island Design

Often there are wasted spaces in a kitchen island. But this is a great place to up the ante on your kitchen organization! In the room above, I crafted shelves at the end of the island for cookbooks, platters, serving items and more. You can also consider drawers, cabinets and other ways to make the most of the island in your kitchen.

6. The Perfect Pantry

If you have the space for a pantry, that will definitely make the most of your kitchen organization. Especially if you set it up with baskets, labels, and jars as I did in my Katy project above. You can create a pantry to fit any size home or kitchen that you have, from a butler’s pantry to a closet-style pantry to a small pull-out shelf behind the fridge.

The key to ALL of these ideas is to use every single inch of your kitchen in the smartest way possible. And the best way to do that is to work with a professional like me! Give me a call if you’re ready to make the most of your home’s design!

Warmly,
