5 Tips for Lovely Laundry Rooms

I love laundry day, with the warm fluffy towels and the clean scents of the soap. And I like to have an organized home, so having a great laundry room is at the top of my list for my clients. These spaces can be combined with other functions, too, if space is at a premium, but it’s a key room to keep a home running efficiently. Here are my top tips for a fabulous laundry room!

1. Keep It Clean

No matter what size space you have for your laundry area, the most important key is to keep it clean and organized. On the shelves in the beach house above, I provided baskets and containers to help my clients organize the soaps and accessories they need to keep this space running efficiently.

2. Use Clever Hacks

Consider every square inch of the space you have and how you want to use it. That will help you make smart choices about what you need to keep the space functioning for you. In the laundry room above, I added custom drying racks that can be pulled out for delicates. It’s a great way to use all the space in the room.

3. Sink Up

An additional sink in a laundry room is a huge help. You can use it to wash or prewash clothing, and to clean up before you head into the main house. Every client that has added a sink to their laundry room has thanked me later - you’ll use it more than you know!

4. Create a Combo

With enough space - or with smart planning - you can create a multipurpose room for your laundry. In the space above, we created a mudroom that would allow people to take off their shoes and store belongings, too. If you have kids, this is such a clever use of the room because kids can change right out of dirty sports equipment or clothing before heading into the house. That keeps the dirt and muck from trailing all through your home.

5. Keep It Entertaining

Be sure the room is fun to enter - give it some color and pattern! And for those of my clients with lots of kids and many loads of laundry in their future, I’ve added a TV to keep the room entertaining during all the fluffing and folding.
