The Way We Live Now: The Master Bedroom

The latest in my blog series discussing how homes and lives are evolving today focuses on a room that is more important to our health and well-being than ever before - the master bedroom. There’s one in every home, but its role in our lives is subtly changing.

More than ever, we need to take care of our health, and that involves a regimen that revolves around work, family, eating well, exercise, and finally, rest and relaxation. And that’s where the new importance is placed on the master bedroom.

At the end of the day, the adults of the house need a oasis to retreat to and recharge. It’s exhausting to be ON all the time in those Zoom meetings, and then you also have home schooling and taking care of the family. Add in a healthy dose of anxiety about the future and you have a serious stress issue. We need the health benefits of sleep more than ever, but we also need a place that’s calming and soothing.

We need a welcoming bed with plenty of pillows to comfort and soothe our bodies. There is nothing better than being enveloped with crisp linens, and a snuggly blanket or comforter at the end of the day. And though we may not realize it, these comforts help our bodies stay strong so we can get up and do it all over again. Invest in the best mattress you can - it’s critical for your health!

If you have the room in your master, an adults-only sitting and entertainment area is also a welcome luxury. There are times when mom or dad need to get away from the rest of the family, so any added amenities will be even more welcoming. You need to find even just an hour for yourself each day. You can’t be there for your family if you’re dealing with an overabundance of stress!

Even a comfy lounge “mini-oasis” can make all the difference, especially with pillows and a throw to create a refuge for napping or reading. Soft lighting is important as well, to soothe eyes that have been staring at a screen all day.

Last, I know it may seem silly, but don’t forget to cut some flowers from outside to brighten your space. We may be in a midst of a pandemic, but reminders of nature and life are always healing.

Be safe and well.

Warmly,

Beth
