Drapery vs. Bare Windows: 4 Tips for Making the Right Decision
The trend back to gorgeous drapery is starting to heat up again, but there are still people who love bare windows. It may seem to be just a personal choice, but of course there are important considerations for when to use curtains and shades, and when you can skip them. As a designer, of course I believe that every window needs that final touch of style, but here are my 4 pro tips that will help you decide!

1. When There Is a Privacy Issue
You definitely want to consider your personal privacy when deciding whether to cover your windows. In a bedroom or bathroom, that’s a no-brainer! But you may also want curtains or drapes if your home is very close to your neighbors, or if you live in an apartment or on a busy street. It’s okay during daylight hours to have those windows uncovered, but at night you might feel as if you’re providing entertainment for the whole street if you don’t have window coverings.

2. When the Room Has a View
There are cases when I do not specify window coverings for my clients. Specifically when the windows are beautiful on their own and when there is a stunning view just outside. In my Cherry Hills project above, the windows are almost a work of art on their own and the placement is unique. Given that you rarely need complete privacy in your kitchen, we left these windows uncovered to make a bigger impact!

3. Consider the Light
Light is an important factor when selecting a window covering. Studies show that people sleep much better in a darker room, so I always recommend full drapery in a bedroom, including a light-blocking panel against the window. In a room that gets gorgeous sunlight all day, you may want to include sheers in your window plans. That will help block some of the rays that might fade artwork, upholstery or other items, but will still give you beautiful light all day.

4. Make a Style Statement
Whether you choose a shade, curtains, blinds or a combination, window coverings can also add a lot of color and style to your home. For many of the rooms I design, I consider those pieces to be like art. In the home office above, I crafted a modern design to add a pop of much-needed color to the space.
