Creating a Spa-Worthy Shower

I recently read an article on how to deal with the enormous amount of stress we all feel thanks to the pandemic. One of the top suggestions was to create a shower or bath experience that would be more like a spa and less like a “regular” bathing chore. I love to create spa-worthy shower for my clients and there are certain things that will definitely uplevel the experience. Let’s take a look!

1. Soothing Tones & Textures

Whether it’s marble, tile, or stone, select sooting colors for the shower. That could be the cool grey-and-white of Carrera or more natural earth tones, like in the shower I designed above. I like to use texture on the floor of the shower, too, because it feels good on your feet and it’s safer.

2. Consider a Wet Room Concept

The wet room is gaining in popularity in the home, and I love the combination of the shower and the tub in the same space without a need for a curtain or shower doors. This is much more like the experience you would have in a spa, where you can go from a tub straight to the shower to really soothe your spirit.

3. Add Some Steam

A steam shower is proven to not only provide a blissful experience, but to also give you some important health benefits. I am in love with the Mr. Steam showers that can also be controlled from your phone. Imagine starting your shower and letting it get to the perfect temperature before you even get out of bed!

4. Built-In Seating

In most showers that I design today, I include a bench if there is any space for it. Sitting and letting the shower run offers a meditative and fabulously soothing experience. And these seats will work perfectly as my clients age, too.

5. Shower Specific Stools

If you don’t already have a built-in seat for your shower, add a chic stool, like the one above. You can find them in teak, acrylic, and lucite - all perfect for wet-weather conditions.

6. Soothing Lights

I added lights around the inset shelf in the shower above. The great thing about that light is that it help my clients see the soaps and shampoos on the shelf, but they can also turn off any overhead lights and have a quiet spa-like experience. It’s a win-win!

7. Alternate Shower Heads

Consider several showerheads when you are remodeling your bathroom. You can have a rain showerhead overhead, a standard showerhead on the wall, and a handheld, too. Each one helps you soothe the stress in your everyday life!

So what do you think of this ideas for your shower experience? Let me know in the comments section below!
