An Open and Shut Case

One of the things I’m asked most often about kitchen cabinets is when they should include glass versus a solid door. The glass doors can look so lovely, but only if you happen to be a well organized person! So here are 3 reasons for using those glass doors and ideas to help you keep them looking fabulous!

1. Your Tableware Is Gorgeous

I’ve only used full-glass cabinet doors on a couple of projects. In those cases, like the one above, my client had absolutely lovely dishes or china. Those can make a fantastic display in a cabinet, particularly if you have a couple of plate easels that can showcase the prettiest pieces. Notice, though, that the other cabinets have solid doors. No one wants to see a display of your canned goods or your Tupperware!

2. You Want to Create the Illusion of Space

This is one of my favorite tricks of the trade and you’ll see it in several of my kitchen designs. When the room is smaller, or you want to create more “openness,” glass doors on just the very top cabinets help to create an illusion of space. Storing vases, special serving items, and sculpture in those cabinets also creates a little artistic moment.

3. You Need Special Sizes

In the kitchen above, we had to place cabinetry around those ceiling beams, which made for strange measurements. I wanted those lower sections to be the same size as the cabinets on the right wall, but then I had extra odd space above. The glass-door cabinets worked perfectly to fill the space without looking off balance or odd. And again, they can be fabulous display cases!

There are 3 great ideas for using glass doors on your cabinets. But remember, if you aren’t super organized and willing to keep those cabinets perfectly arranged, you might just want to stick with the usual solid doors, like in the kitchen I designed above.

So which one would you choose?? Let me know in the comments section below!

Warmly,
