3 Tips for Selecting Grout

There are so many fun and pretty selections to make when you’re designing your home. And then there are a lot of mundane selections, too, like where to place your outlets and light switches, whether to use knobs or handles on your doors, and which grout color you should choose for your tile. But those “mundane” decisions can have a big impact on how much you love the rooms in your home! Grout color can make or break a fabulous look in your bathroom or kitchen, so don’t rush through that selection process. Here are three tips that will help you decide which grout to choose.

1. Blend In

If you want to have a more subtle look, choose a grout color that blends into the tile’s palette. In the kitchen above, I chose a soft white that would allow the pattern to shine through. and in the bathroom below, the grout is so similar to the tile color in the shower that it looks completely seamless.

2. Make a Contrast

You can also take an entirely opposite approach by selecting a grout that really stands out against the tile. In the bathrooms above and below, I used white grout with colored subway tiles to give the look more of a statement. You can also use a darker grout with lighter-toned tiles. But when you use this “opposites attract” approach, be sure that the grout color complements another color in the room. Otherwise it will hit the wrong tone.

3. Highlight a Pattern

There are tiles that can be placed in so many different patterns. I love playing with these to get the pattern that I want, like the combo of triangles and hexagons above. In that case, the grout helps highlight the pattern. I used the color that is in the center of the hexagon so it would contrast really well with the triangle colors. And in the penny tile floor below, the contrasting grout keeps your eye on the “penny” shape. If I had used grout that was the same color as the tile, you would barely notice the shape of the floor.
