One can’t help but think of bright citrus hues during the peak of summer. Orange, lemon, lime, and grapefruit seem to jump out at you wherever you are - whether pool or beach side, hanging from the racks at Neiman Marcus, or even in the aisles of your local Target. Citrus hues are a summer staple! But in the world of interior design, I like to use these hot hues year ‘round. Who doesn’t love a sunny yellow or bright lime on a gray winter’s day? These happy colors are always a pick-me-up, no matter the season!
In my Galveston beach house, designed for HGTV’s Brother vs. Brother, I used lots of blue and white beach tones throughout the house, but punched it up in the guest bedroom with a liberal splash of grapefruit in the jaunty striped curtains.
Could this lemon yellow chair be anymore perfect? Makes the room sing!
No color makes me happier than orange, so I think I would be very happy indeed to spend time in this vibrant sitting room.
Lime green velvet on a delicious scalloped and tufted banquette is also making me smile! The perfect splash of citrus!
Last, a fun fact totally unrelated to interiors, but did you know that our favorite modern citrus fruits - limes, lemons, grapefruits and oranges - are all naturally occurring mutations of the ancient “citron” tree, first recorded in the 4th century BC, in what is now Iraq. Who knew?
Enjoy your favorite summer-hued citrus!
