Selecting the Perfect Stool

The number one request in most kitchen designs today is for a fabulous kitchen island (or two!). An island gives you so much functionality, offering more workspace and a great place for family and guests to sit. If you have a kitchen island, remember that it will be one of the most popular seats in the house, so choose your stools wisely. How? I have inside tips for you!

The Right Height

Almost everyone says barstool, but with kitchen islands we’re really talking about counter stools. And yes, that refers to the height of the stool. Bar height stools have seat heights that are around 28 inches to 32 inches, so they will fit under table tops with a height of 40 to 42 inches. Counter stools have a seat height of 24 to 27 inches high for surfaces that are 36 inches high. And that’s usually the height of your countertops. Pay close attention to the seat height of the stools you want to buy, and measure that space from your counter to the floor!

Easy Slider

If you have kids in the house, definitely think about the weight of the stool. Large upholstered stools can be hard for little ones to pull out and climb onto. Select lightweight aluminum, wood, or resin stools that are easy to move, and easy to clean!

Foot Rest

It’s important to have a foot rest or rail on the lower part of a counter stool. Dangling your legs can cut off blood supply, which is uncomfortable, to say the least. A rail will let your feet sit naturally and comfortably. Those rails are also useful for pulling the stool up to the counter. And they’ll help little ones climb up all by themselves.

Comfort Is King

If your kitchen island will be a top destination for your friends and family, be sure they’re comfortable while they’re sitting there. Upholstered seats and backs will keep people sitting pretty for hours, which is more fun when you’re in the kitchen.

Fabric Perfection

Be sure your counter stools are covered in performance fabrics that will withstand any wear, tear, or stains that may be thrown at them. Many families use their kitchen island as their #1 dining spot, so protect the gorgeous look with fabrics that won’t show every meal.
