5 Pro Tips: Color in the Kitchen

I do love classic design, but I also like to step out of the box when it comes to interiors. So I am a fan of color in the kitchen, although many people are nervous of using anything but white. Most people are afraid of making the wrong - and costly - decisions when it comes to their home’s design, and I totally understand that. So here are my pro tips for using color in the kitchen that will help you make selections that you’ll be happy with for years to come!

1. Choose Colors that You Already Love

If blue is your favorite color, then go with blue! If you’re crazy about green, then you’re going to be happy with that color in any room, including your kitchen. So make the first step an easy one! In the kitchen above, I created a custom blue-green color for the wall of cabinets that gives this kitchen a serene look.

2. Create a Cohesive Look

If your kitchen is part of an open-plan space, be sure you craft a look that is going to work well with the other sections of the room. In the Katy, TX, kitchen I designed above, you can see how the chairs inspired that bold blue on the island and the custom range hood. You want there to be a great color story that moves through the entire space.

3. Remember that Paint Is Cheap

If you are nervous about adding color, then be sure to add it in places where you can change it if necessary. I always say that in the grand scheme of things, paint is cheap. So you can see in the coastal kitchen I designed above, it would be easy to paint over the island and cabinetry if my client ever tires of the pretty ocean blue.

4. Let Nature Be Your Guide

You’ll never go wrong if you take your color inspiration from what Mother Nature has right outside your home. In the Telluride, CO, kitchen I designed above, we used the warm woods and leaf green colors to create a room that blends seamlessly with the outdoor setting.

5. Be Bold!

If you are feeling brave, then make a bold choice! Black is a fabulous selection for the kitchen I designed above. Especially because all of those fantastic windows keep the room from being too dark. In fact, the black on the lower cabinets grounds the space. It’s a super-chic and modern design that I love.
