Lighten Up!

I love this time of year when spring is bursting out all over, and everything is fresh and new. The light suddenly becomes brighter every day and reinvigorates our outlook. Which also means it’s time to reinvigorate our decor and bring that lightness inside. I have some great ways to lighten things up for spring in your home!

Blooming Spring

Always the easiest, simplest, and for me the most joy-inducing remedy to lighten up a space and welcome spring is to bring in fresh flowers. Spring blooms in shades of pink, white, and yellow brighten and cheer any room.

Change It Up

Another fast and easy way to lighten up is to change out your linens. Put the woolens, the jewel-toned velvets, and the cable knit throws into storage until fall, and bring out crisp linen-print pillows, and matelasse bed covers, in light or pastel tones. The transformation is most dramatic in a bedroom as shown below, but you’d be shocked at how much a pair of pastel linen pillows and a pale cotton throw on your sofa can transform your living room for a new season!

Go to the Wall

Interior walls need to be repainted about every five years, so I’d imagine many of you are due for an update. And of course the biggest change you can make to lighten up a room is to repaint. Lately, I’ve been drawn to Benjamin Moore’s Paper White 1590 (used in my University project, featured in a recent post). It’s definitely white, but with a neutral gray cast, so it’s perfect for sunny spaces. It has just enough of a color so bright white trim contrasts beautifully. I always encourage friends and clients to change their paint colors for maximum style impact. Nothing changes the feel of a room like fresh, new paint on the walls!

Reflecting Light

Last, the best way to lighten up any room, large or small, with white walls or dark, is the liberal use of mirrors. Here, master designer Timothy Corrigan used a light and bright palette for his textiles, but what really makes the room come alive is all the reflective surfaces. The large pier mirror, the mirrored console, and mirrored cocktail table would still make the room bright, even if the color palette was dark and moody. I can’t express enough the transformative power of mirrors. They are truly magic for the the home!
