Behind the Scenes: The Utility Room

In my post-Hurricane Harvey flood damage renovation, I initially thought I was only going to use the original footprint of the house, and I that’s exactly what I did... almost. The only change i decided to make was extending my utility room and outdoor storage out 6 feet. It’s a very modest addition, but really solved so many problems. Let’s take a look at what I’m thinking about for this space…

With the modest gain in square footage, I am able to reconfigure my closet to have nearly double the hanging space compared to before. We also kept the needed outdoor storage, and finally I have a proper laundry room/mud room, and I couldn’t be more excited about that. No more folding laundry in a closet!

For the utility room, I’m going a bit more casual than the rest of the house (as it should be - it’s a utilitarian room after all). I’m leaning toward a tough-use fireclay farmhouse sink, a gorgeously sleek DXV “Isle” pulldown faucet, and Alno “Cents” cabinet pulls.

Another thing I’m so excited about Is fulfilling a long-held dream by using a Dutch door at the entrance to the utility room/back of house. Still designing it, but as you can see from my inspiration images, it’s going to be amazing!

What a difference this 6 feet is going to make! I’m getting very excited about my renovation! Let me know what you think in the comments below.

Warmly,
