Back to Basics: Choosing Paint Color
Last month I talked about adding color to your space through furniture, accessories, and paint. I mentioned that you should choose your paint color last in order to select a paint color that unifies your space.
When you’ve reached that step of choosing a paint color, use these tips to select a great color for your space!
1. Start Small If you are new to using color in your home, start with a small space like a powder room or a laundry room. Small rooms are great places to try out your daring side because they are usually not the most used spaces in the home. Or you could start with a small part of a bigger area – for example, painting just one wall, or the wall behind bookshelves. Jessica Dauray of Elements of Style Interiors did a fab job highlighting this small space with a jolt of energy!
2. Create a Mood Another thing to consider when you are choosing a paint color, is the mood of a room. Do you want your bedroom to be relaxing or dramatic? Do you want your home office to use bright colors to stimulate concentration or pastels to create a calming work space? Designer Sarah Wittenbraker chose to go with a cobalt blue in this office space, and it really works!
3. Check Your Lighting Different light sources can cast a different tone on your paint color, which is why paint stores have light boxes so you can see how your paint would look in different lights. Natural light shows the truest color. Incandescent light highlights warm tones like yellow and orange and fluorescent light casts a blue tone. Paint a small test area and watch it for at least 24 hours so you can see how different light in the room impacts the color.
Tobi Fairley is known for her use of color, and this room wrapped in lavender is a great inspiration for anyone deciding how to use bright colors in their own homes.
I hope these tips help you choose the color that works best for you and your home. Be sure to share your color successes in the comments area below!
